The Australia-China Young Scientists Exchange Program (YSEP) is a joint initiative funded by the Australian Department of Industry Innovation and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It is supported by the Commonwealth of Australia under the Australia-China Science and Research Fund (science and research knowledge exchange).
The YSEP aims to provide a catalyst to bring together future science leaders from Australia and China to foster long-term relationships to:
- Increase early and mid-career Australian and Chinese researchers understanding of the cultures, particularly the science and research practices and systems, of the two countries;
- Develop the researchers’ leadership skills as future “science ambassadors” for Australia and China; and
- Provide a catalyst for future Australia-China Research collaboration.
YSEP will provide participants with exposure to higher order issues outside their scientific/technical specialty, including science and technology policy and best practice research management.
Host organisations will provide mentoring to their visitors and these visitors are encouraged to establish professional relationships of mutual benefit to future scientific collaboration between the two countries. Exchange activities will include visits to key policy and funding agencies.
Funding & Duration
Up to 20 applicants will be accepted as a YSEP awardee. The successful applicants will receive:
- return economy airfares from Australia to China;
- visa application fees and travel insurance;
- accommodation, domestic travel within China; meals and incidentals will be covered in China.
- NOTE: Successful applicants will be supported by an in-country liaison officer from CSTEC.
Australian participants will travel as a group to China in the given travel period: 30 October – 11 November 2016.
Eligibility
Australian applicants must:
- be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents, but who do not have consolidated links with China and have not lived, studied or worked in China for longer than a total of 3 months;
- be an early to mid-career researcher. An early to mid-career researcher is defined as: A researcher who has had between 3 and 10 years of research experience since the award of his/her PhD (or equivalent research qualification), with the PhD having been awarded between 3 and 15 years prior to the closing date for submission of applications.

Submission Requirements & Internal Due Date
ATSE will only accept three applications per eligible research or industry organisation. The Research Grants Office will be responsible for selecting the best candidate from within UWA.
As such, the Internal Deadline will be COB Monday 6 June 2016 . Please send your completed application, along with a signed and completed copy of the University’s Grant Application Cover Sheet to michelle.emmett@uwa.edu.au by this date.
If more than 3 applications are received, an internal review process will commence. The selected applications will be submitted to ATSE by the external closing date of 20 June 2016.
