SUMMARY:Defining and Measuring Health Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Professor Philip Clarke is Director of Centre for Health Policy at University of Melbourne. Previously\, Prof Clarke held positions at the Sydney School of Public Health and at the University of Oxford. His research interest include evaluating policies to improve the management of people with chronic diseases such as diabetes\, health inequalities and the use of simulation models to inform health economic evaluation. He has also undertaken policy relevant research for the World Bank\, OECD\, AusAID and DoH and is on the Lancet Commission on Diabetes. \n  \nAbstract \nThe seminar will focus on recent collaborative research with Guido Erreygers which aims to: \n(1) elaborate how the concept of ‘health poverty’ can be defined and measured\, and; \n(2) apply this methodology to study health poverty in a variety of cases. Although not entirely new\, the notion of health poverty is seldom used – in contrast to the notion of income poverty. After examining measures of income poverty such as the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) class of poverty indicators we consider how they can be employed with health measures such as the risk of chronic diseases and mortality. We use this approach to obtain a robust estimate of the extent of health poverty in Australia and attempt to measure its evolution over time using data from the HILDA’s survey. \n  \nEvent details \n\n\n\nEvent: \nDefining and Measuring Health Poverty\n\n\nDate: \nWednesday  30th August  2017\n\n\nTime: \n12.00 – 1.00pm\n\n\nLocation: \n108.102 \nCurtin University\nKent Street\, Bentley\n\n\nRSVP:\nNo RSVP required

SUMMARY:WAHTN Clinical Trials Forum
DESCRIPTION:The next WAHTN Clinical Trials Forum will be hosted at the Telethon Kids Institute\, 100 Roberts Road\, Subiaco on Monday 14th August 2017 at 5pm – 7pm (see attached map). Please note we have onsite parking but this is limited to 15 car bays. There is ticketed parking available along Roberts Road and Hamilton Street. Subiaco Road has some free car spaces available as well (as well as ticketed parking). \nThis forum is an opportunity for sharing knowledge\, experience\, advice\, and ideas\, in relation to current proposals for clinical trials\, with a wide range of researchers from WA. The forum will occur monthly and will generally involve presentation and discussion of two clinical trial proposals.  Proposals are welcome from both experienced and less experienced investigators. \nSpeakers for this forum: \nDr Ben Saville from Berry Consultants (Austin\, Texas) will be presenting on “Adaptive Clinical Trials for the 21st Century”. \nAs medical research continues to push into new frontiers of discovery and personalized patient care\, it is imperative that clinical trial designs evolve to address the forthcoming challenges. One key innovation is the use of adaptive clinical trial designs.  Such designs allow certain trial design features to change during the course of the trial based on observed data within the trial.  These adaptations are planned prospectively and are used to increase trial efficiency and to increase the probability of achieving the scientific goals of the study.  Adaptive trial designs may include frequent interim analyses\, adaptive sample sizes\, longitudinal modelling of time-delayed outcomes\, borrowing of historical data\, study population enrichment\, or response adaptive randomization.  We discuss common adaptations in various disease settings\, illustrating the benefits compared to traditional designs\, and provide examples of real trial designs. \nDr Chris Blyth (Paediatrician\, Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist at Princess Margaret Hospital) will be discussing PATRIC: Pragmatic Adaptive Trial for Respiratory Infection in Children. \nAcute respiratory infection is the most common cause for paediatric hospitalisation in WA. Although mortality from ARI is uncommon in Australia\, the morbidity and economic cost of paediatric ARI remains enormous. In a highly vaccinated population\, the majority of childhood lower respiratory tract infection or pneumonia is secondary to  respiratory virus infection: despite this\, most children with pneumonia are prescribed antibiotics. Inappropriate antimicrobial therapy is a major driver the antimicrobial resistance and this remains one of the world’s great current public health threats. Using a pragmatic adaptive design and patient/parental reported outcomes\, PATRIC will be the first clinical trial to compare the safety and efficacy of short-course antibiotic therapy and placebo in children with mild-moderate outpatient pneumonia.  \nA calendar invite will be sent shortly. If you are attending\, please do accept so we have an idea of numbers for catering purposes as light refreshments will be served. \n\nContact Details:\nInge Timmerman at inge.timmerman@telethonkids.org.au
