SUMMARY:Bettering Aboriginal Heart Health in WA
DESCRIPTION:Cardiovascular disease remains a significant contributor to the health inequities experienced by Aboriginal people. It is heartening that the CVD mortality gap has been narrowing and that daily smoking rates have reduced by 12.6% since 2004 in the Aboriginal population. In fact\, between 2006 and 2018\, the WA Aboriginal mortality rate has improved by 27%\, driven by CV improvements. \nWhile much good work has been done in this space\, there remains so much more to do. \nBettering Aboriginal Heart Health in WA (BAHHWA) is a group of researchers\, clinicians and community stakeholders who are committed to reducing the health and social impact of cardiovascular disease on Aboriginal people\, their families and communities. They have been undertaking research and translational work regarding Aboriginal CV health in WA since 2008. \nBAHHWA are planning an open networking forum to re-invigorate the BAHHWA community of practice to promote action in this space. \nPlease come and yarn with BAHHWA to help identify priority activities for BAHWAA over the coming years. Your input will help to shape the new direction and be part of the solution to continued improvement in Aboriginal heart disease and stroke in WA and beyond. Given the current circumstances and the difficulty some may have to get to the meeting\, this will be a mixed format meeting with in person and Zoom options available. \nThe meeting will be held at the new Aboriginal Studies building at UWA\, on Hackett Drive\, Crawley opposite the Matilda Bay Tea Room. The Room is on the ground floor and entrance is on the right side of the building\, rather than the main entrance. \nPlease RSVP if you would like to attend in person as COVID-19 requirements must be met. \nIf attending via Zoom\, the Zoom details can be found below. If attending in person please note: \n\nThe venue needs a swipe card for entry. Rebecca will be waiting at the entrance to the building until 1.10pm. She will let you in and if your name is not on the list\, you will be required to register at the desk.\nFruit and coffee will be available as refreshments.\nPaid parking should be available on Hackett Drive opposite the building\, near the Bayside Kitchen.\n\nRSVP to Judith.katzenellenbogen@uwa.edu.au \n  \nZoom details: \nTime: Sep 25\, 2020 1:00 PM Perth \nJoin from a PC\, Mac\, iPad\, iPhone or Android device: \nPlease click this URL to start or join: https://uwa.zoom.us/j/91467804584?pwd=RUNSNFJuOFEvcXVQVGVQZWt3Ykg4dz09 \nPassword: 237768 \n  \nJoin from dial-in phone line: \nDial: \n+61 861 193 900 ( Perth ) \n+61 8 7150 1149 ( Adelaide ) \n+61 2 8015 2088 ( Sydney ) \n+61 2 8015 6011 ( Sydney ) \n+61 3 7018 2005 ( Melbourne ) \n+61 731 853 730 ( Queensland ) \nMeeting ID: 914 6780 4584 \nInternational numbers available: https://uwa.zoom.us/u/adY7Y8opTR \n  \nJoin from a H.323/SIP room system: \n  \nDial: 91467804584@zoom.aarnet.edu.au \nor 91467804584@zmau.us \nor 103.122.166.55 (Australia) \nor 0262227588 ( Zoom Attendant ) \nMeeting ID: 914 6780 4584 \nH323/SIP Password: 237768 \n  \nOr Skype for Business (Lync): \nSIP:91467804584.237768@lync.zoom.us

SUMMARY:Diversity Dialogues: Quality care from a physical distance
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this panel discussion is delivering quality and culturally responsive telehealth services to people from culturally and linguistically diverse populations\, through the pandemic and beyond. \nCOVID-19 quickly thrust us into using telehealth (phone\, online and video consultations) which has resulted in a range of great benefits as well as numerous issues\, particularly for this hard to reach population. \nOur panel will discuss lived experience and use expert knowledge to explore and unpack the issues and provide practical strategies to achieve best practice. There will also be time to answer audience questions. \nThe Diversity Dialogues seminar series has been developed by the Health Consumers’ Council WA (HCC) for consumers and health service providers to explore ways to develop health services and patient care strategies that respond to cultural diversity. \nThe HCC has partnered with the Digital Health CRC\, Curtin University and La Trobe University to bring you this inaugural online Diversity Dialogues event. \nThis webinar is free to attend and is aimed at health service providers wishing to improve capacity\, capability\, and confidence in this area. It may also be of interest to health consumer representatives. \nRegister for this event \n

SUMMARY:Fighting the war against COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:This virtual event will discuss the battle against COVID-19 which almost literally put WA’s Health Department in wartime mode. The urgency to save lives\, respond to an unprecedented and rapidly changing environment and communicate factually to the public\, are some of the factors WA’s Director General of Health\, Dr David Russell-Weisz and WA’s State Health Incident Controller and Deputy Chief Health Officer\, Dr Robyn Lawrence are managing. \nMeanwhile\, in Israel\, on the other side of the world\, the same pandemic is being managed by Public Health officials more accustomed to extreme situations and crisis. Asher Salmon is Head of International Relations\, Israel Ministry of Health. His role is to facilitate cooperation between the Israeli health system and foreign partners like the WA Health Department contingent and delegates who visited on the May 2019 AICC(WA) Health & Medical Delegation to Israel. The purpose of Asher’s work is to improve the health and quality of care for both Israeli citizens and the international community and in doing so\, they not only learn from their foreign colleagues such as from WA\, but also to share Israeli expertise across countless fields of medicine\, contributing to better healthcare worldwide and creating stronger relations for the State of Israel. \nCurrently\, both Health systems have been praised for their handling of the pandemic but from different starting points and societal factors. For the first time\, direct from the front lines\, Dr Russell-Weisz\, Dr Robyn Lawrence and Mr Salmon under the expert facilitation of our event moderator Dr Carlo Bellini\, will share their lessons and insights on the management of this on-going pandemic. \nView event invitation for further details \nPlease email Koshala Shanmugakumar to register your interest for this event
