Implementation Science

What is implementation science?

Implementation science is the systematic study of methods and strategies to support the uptake of evidence-based practices into routine care and community settings. Its central aim is to close the “know–do” gap—the often-significant delay between the generation of research evidence and its consistent application in real-world practice.

The WAHTN Implementation Science Platform

The WAHTN Implementation Science Platform was launched in 2026 with the goal of providing foundational expertise, tools and training to help researchers, clinicians, clinician researchers, policy makers and related professionals navigate the practical challenges of putting research into practice.

Currently available on the platform is the:
  • Implementation Science Resource Library, a fully searchable database of over 80 implementation science resources, and,
  • The Implementation Cafe, an initiative developed by the Nutrition and Health Innovation Research Institute (Edith Cowan University) that offers online journal club sessions, implementation workshops and training opportunities.

Upcoming projects and opportunities from the Implementation Science Platform include:

  • An in-person Implementation Science symposium to showcase and promote implementation work amongst WAHTN Partners together with a workshop to provide practical advice; more information on the event can be found here.
  • An Implementation Science Community of Practice, bringing together the expertise available in Western Australia to identify and solve implementation barriers in the WA health system.
  • Working with WAHTN Partners to broaden the reach and opportunities of implementation science.
