Bettering Aboriginal Heart Health in WA

Details

Date:
Friday 25th September 2020
Time:
1:00 pm

Cardiovascular disease remains a significant contributor to the health inequities experienced by Aboriginal people. It is heartening that the CVD mortality gap has been narrowing and that daily smoking rates have reduced by 12.6% since 2004 in the Aboriginal population. In fact, between 2006 and 2018, the WA Aboriginal mortality rate has improved by 27%, driven by CV improvements.

While much good work has been done in this space, there remains so much more to do.

Bettering Aboriginal Heart Health in WA (BAHHWA) is a group of researchers, clinicians and community stakeholders who are committed to reducing the health and social impact of cardiovascular disease on Aboriginal people, their families and communities. They have been undertaking research and translational work regarding Aboriginal CV health in WA since 2008.

BAHHWA are planning an open networking forum to re-invigorate the BAHHWA community of practice to promote action in this space.

Please come and yarn with BAHHWA to help identify priority activities for BAHWAA over the coming years. Your input will help to shape the new direction and be part of the solution to continued improvement in Aboriginal heart disease and stroke in WA and beyond. Given the current circumstances and the difficulty some may have to get to the meeting, this will be a mixed format meeting with in person and Zoom options available.

The meeting will be held at the new Aboriginal Studies building at UWA, on Hackett Drive, Crawley opposite the Matilda Bay Tea Room. The Room is on the ground floor and entrance is on the right side of the building, rather than the main entrance.

Please RSVP if you would like to attend in person as COVID-19 requirements must be met.

If attending via Zoom, the Zoom details can be found below. If attending in person please note:

  • The venue needs a swipe card for entry. Rebecca will be waiting at the entrance to the building until 1.10pm. She will let you in and if your name is not on the list, you will be required to register at the desk.
  • Fruit and coffee will be available as refreshments.
  • Paid parking should be available on Hackett Drive opposite the building, near the Bayside Kitchen.
